A ten-second exposure of the night sky. None of this series came out as I'd hoped, but this one's still cool.

Phở, anyone?

Back in Melbourne, there was an excellent Phở restaurant about a mile from my house. Since moving to Delray, I've been on the lookout for a proper Vietnamese joint (as opposed to a HipAsianBistro(tm)).

Tonight, I finally had a chance to eat at Cây Đa, located along US1 on the North end of Boca Raton.

It is a simple, unassuming place, tucked away in a strip mall, and its humble feel is a welcome change from the slick-but-shallow shininess of your typical Boca eatery.

As for the food, I left with that happy glowy warm feeling that only a large bowl of Phở can give. And what better endorsement can I give than that?

I will definitely return.

The Foodstuff of Life

"Yes, I love seafood -- See food, eat food."

It's been said that a good cook is like a witch that dispenses happiness. I don't know if either part of that applies to me, but I live for those moments. It's why I bring random baked goods into the office; it's why I'm going to cook another massive Thanksgiving bash with an "if you cook it, they will come" outlook.

So I'm finally promoting Food into its own category -- whether or not it comes out of my kitchen. I'll include short restaurant reviews here too, starting with the place I ate at earlier this evening.

Odd Juxtaposition

The bag of groceries I just put away included two pounds of dark brown sugar, five pounds of granulated sugar, and a pair of "no sugar added" apple pastries.

Happy Face is Tipsy

208751:299367

This is one of the two pineapple upside-down rum cakes that just came out of the oven. The top half inch is a gooey mass of buttery-brown-sugary-rummy-pineappley--awesomeness.

I'm going to need to transport these with the windows open!

I still have enough rum-marinated pineapple for a third cake, but I ran out of some of the other ingredients -- If I make another one this weekend, I'll spike it with a liberal dose of chopped pecans rather than the few I used as a garnish for these two.

The man behind the curtain

207789:297441

Clint and his wife Sharee are the driving force behind the Paralounge Drum Gathering. This is a rare moment of him taking it easy during a facilitated drum circle.

As an aside, about a year ago Clint opened up Inkinyu Tattoo in his home turf of Live Oak, Florida.

A good mood.

I'm in a good mood. Not the sort of "good" you say when random folks ask you how you are, but rather, a comfortable centered warmth. You know, good.

There isn't any one dominant reason for this; it is sort of an accumulation of a thousand paper cuts over an extended period of time, but this past weekend seemed to be the tipping point.

I actually relaxed, had fun, and genuinely socialized. Helped instigate two doumbek circles, and shared the sort of intimate moments that only very late night conversations can bring about.

I watched sunsets and sunrises, punctuated by peaceful sleep in my bright yellow banana hammock, suspended beneath a pair of century-old live oak trees. Listened to late-summer cicadas serenading above the babble of children playing. And shooed a wolf spider out of my clean clothes.

I returned home to a subtly different world, with a lighter, centered ease I haven't felt in a long, long while.

Life is good.

Hi, I am John Adams of the US Army base in Afghanistan for peace
keeping. I found your contact in an address journal. I seek your
assistance to remove some funds as long as I am assured that it will be
safe in your care until I complete my service here in Afghanistan. This
is not stolen money and there are no dangers involved in this. this is
legit and there will be no discomfort. Please this is very important
and urgent

John Adams

Let's see, what's wrong with this:

  • WTF is an "address journal"
  • Sent via a hijacked Brazilian government account
  • I wonder where "the" US Army Base in Afghanistan is located?
  • "John Adams", really? I wonder if that was an ironic choice.

Apparently the Deerfield Beach PD employs an unmarked minivan to perform traffic stops. I think it needs a soccer sticker on one of the rear windows to complete its urban camo.

Korean BBQ

206844:295553

While in Santa Clara, I was treated to dinner at a grill-at-the-table Korean BBQ place. It was an experience. A delicious, delicious experience.

And I still don't like kimchi. Not because it's too spicy or otherwise strongly seasoned, because like all cabbage, it makes me incredibly (and painfully) gassy.

Further dyesub printer driver devleopments

After I was finished with the work-related portion of my journey to England, I had a couple of days to myself. The folks at LiveLink offered to host me if I dropped by, and I happily accepted. (I had a grand time -- thanks guys!)

While visiting their offices, I had the opportunity to play with some of the photo printers they had lying around. This resulted in some developments:

  • DNP DS40 is confirmed working (I haven't done any work on this printer)
  • Kodak 6850 needed some tweaks relating to media detection, but otherwise appears to work for 4x6 and 6x8 prints.
  • Shinko S2145 gained a "fast return" mode to enable better pipelining of multiple print jobs.

They also had a pair of Mitsubishi printers, a CP-D70DW and its sibling the CP-707DW. Through some convoluted hackery, I was able to obtain a series of packet dumps of the raw USB handshake those printers use.

During my long transatlantic flight, I dug into these dumps and was able to figure out the basic protocol the printers used. It's only a slight extension of the raw spool format. We're theoretically now able to perform status queries -- In particular the remaining media on both "decks" of the printer. The rest of the information remains to be decoded, but the important stuff should be pretty straightforward to figure out with access to a real printer.

I also identified a lamination-related bug in Gutenprint's code, related to a mistake I made when reverse-engineering the CP-D70x spool format.

I haven't committed the mitsu_70x spooler to gutenprint yet, but it's available in my spooler repository along with a test printjob for interested parties to try out. With luck, this will be merged into Gutenprint proper before much longer.

Round and around and around I go..

It's funny; I usually don't consider myself particularly creative or imaginative, but sometimes something just grips me and I can't shake it from my mind and I have no means of expressing it artistically with a camera.

...I see an empty playground on a grey, overcast day; the last remnants of fall colors haphazardly scattered around.

...I see a dull, steel-and-rust roundabout, tilting slightly off-center, squeaking in the biting wind.

...And I see myself through my eyes.
